A Day in the Magical Coastal Town of Peñíscola
If you’re in Valencia and looking for an interesting day trip, look no further than Peñíscola! Known as ‘The City of the Sea’ as it’s only connected to mainland by a narrow strip of land, Peñíscola is a town you might imagine in a fairytale. Surrounded by turquoise water, a castle sits atop the rock of what used to be an island, with the town around and below.
Peñíscola is full of culture, history, beautiful beaches, and delicious food. Many movies and TV shows have been filmed here as well, including Game of Thrones!
Peñíscola has been a popular town throughout history for its advantageous location on the Mediterranean Sea and its secure fortress. Over hundreds of years, it was home to many civilizations throughout Spanish history, including the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Christians.
What to Expect:
Exploring the historical town and windy streets you’ll find whitewashed houses, cafes and shops all among picturesque medieval cobblestone streets, as well as intermittent views of the sea. Traditionally a fishing village, it’s not surprising that fresh seafood and fish are the specialty due to the location. There are over 200 restaurants in this town, so you’ll have no trouble finding adorable restaurants around every corner!
Apart from the beaches and windy streets, Peñíscola is most famous for its castle, or Pope Luna’s Fortress. Built during the 13th and 14th centuries, the fortress is located atop a rock at the highest point of the city overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
