Horchata Day in Alboraya: A Celebration You Can’t Miss

If you’re learning Spanish in Valencia, you’ve got a brilliant opportunity waiting for you tomorrow: Horchata Day in Alboraya. On 9th July, this little town (considered the world capital of horchata) opens its doors to celebrate its most treasured drink with a day packed full of tradition and flavour.

Alboraya: The Heart of Valencian Horchata

Alboraya isn’t just another town in the L’Horta Nord region. It’s the epicentre of a tradition that goes back centuries, when the Arabs introduced tiger nut cultivation to Valencian lands. The Mediterranean climate and unique soils of this area created perfect conditions for what we now know as authentic tiger nut horchata.

Valencia’s tiger nuts have had Protected Designation of Origin status since 1996, and Alboraya is their crown jewel. Here, families have passed down the art of growing tiger nuts and making this recipe that’s won everyone over, generation after generation.

A Full Day of Celebration: “L’orxata a Alboraya sap a molt més”

This year’s motto, “Horchata in Alboraya tastes like so much more”, perfectly captures what this day means to the local community. It’s not just a foodie celebration, but a proper showcase of cultural identity and pride in the traditions that have defined this town for centuries. Here are the main activities you can get stuck into:

Free Horchata for Everyone

At 12:00 PM, on Horchata Avenue, they start giving out free artisanal horchata and fartons (whilst stocks last). Picture it: authentic horchata, freshly made, served alongside traditional fartons (those long, fluffy buns that are absolutely perfect for dunking in your horchata).

The Orxata Experiences

It’s also the day of the Orxata Experiences: free guided tours and workshops to get up close with tiger nut cultivation and horchata making.

  • Orxata Tour at Món Orxata: Two groups at 10:00 AM in Spanish and one at 12:00 PM in English, with 30 spaces each. Perfect for international students wanting the full experience. Obviously, we’d recommend the Spanish tour so you can practice your Spanish!
  • Orxata Workshop at Alqueria Maria Llistar: Two groups of 30 people at 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM, where you’ll learn how the artisanal production process actually works.
  • From Tiger Nut to Horchata Route: Two groups of 30 people at 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM to discover the complete journey from cultivation to glass.
The Grand Finale: Orxatast

To cap off the day in style, at midnight, the Orxatast will roam around the fairgrounds with backpacks loaded with horchata and fartons. Have you ever seen anything like it? Only in Alboraya does horchata become the ultimate midnight snack!

More Than a Drink: A Symbol of Identity

To understand the importance of this day, you need to understand that horchata isn’t just a refreshing drink for Valencians. It’s a symbol of identity for families and the community, especially in Alboraya, where tradition is literally in the air.

The artisanal production process requires time, patience and proper know-how. Tiger nuts are soaked, crushed and filtered several times until you get that creamy white liquid that defines authentic Valencian horchata. No preservatives, no artificial additives: just tiger nuts, water, sugar and generations of expertise.

A Day to Learn and Enjoy

As a Spanish student in Valencia, this celebration offers you a unique chance to:

  • Experience local culture first-hand and understand the traditions that define Valencian identity.
  • Practice your Spanish with locals in a festive atmosphere.
  • Learn specific vocabulary related to horchata, tiger nuts and local agriculture.

How to Join the Activities

You can book any of the experiences at the Tourist Info offices in La Patacona or Port Saplaya.

It’s more than just a tasting: it’s a complete immersion into Valencian culture, a chance to connect with local traditions and, of course, to practice your Spanish whilst enjoying one of the world’s most special drinks. Your taste buds and your Spanish will thank you!
