If you’re looking for the perfect mix of history, sea views, and fun, Peñíscola is the perfect day trip from Valencia. Nestled on the eastern coast of Spain in the province of Castellón, in the more northen part of the Communidad Valenciana,  this charming town with stunning views is like something out of a storybook, and will be sure to not disapoint. 

A Castle in the Sea

The highlight of Peñíscola is without doubt Peñíscola Castle, also known as the Castillo del Papa Luna. This impressive fortress sits dramatically on a rocky headland, jutting out into the Mediterranean Sea and the sky. It was originally built by the Knights Templar between 1294 and 1307, and later 15th century it became the home of Pope Benedict XIII, who was also known as «Papa Luna».

Walking through the castle feels like stepping back in time. You’ll see ancient stone halls, lookout towers, and breathtaking views of the coastline. Be sure to bring your camera — the views from the top are incredible!

Explore the Pretty Pueblo

Beyond the castle, the old town of Peñíscola is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets and whitewashed buildings. This area is full of charm and picturesque little streets. You’ll pass small artisan shops, cozy cafés, and lots of cats lounging in the sun!

Make sure to take some time to wander and soak in the atmosphere. It’s a great spot for taking photos, stopping for lunch or ‘para tomar algo’ (having a drink or coffee) in the sun!

A Beach with a view

Apart from the historical side of Peñíscola,  the town is also famous for its beautiful sandy beaches. Playa Norte (North Beach) is the most popular and stretches right along the promenade with the castle in the background.

There’s plenty of space to relax, play games, or even go for a dip in the sea. You can also take in the views while enjoying an ice cream on the boardwalk or grab lunch with your classmates at one of the beachfront restaurants.

Game of Thrones

One of the thing the first comes to mind when you hear of Peñiscola is the famous series «Game of Thrones». Any fans of the series would instantly recognise it as the city of Meereen! Wandering around the town you might even recognise some of the streets and views and castle walls from the show!
