Reflections after the DANA: A Q&A with one of our students

Hi Niklas, Thank you so much for taking the time to answer some of our questions today. We’d like to provide an update to our students and readers regarding the current situation in Valencia. As you know, the DANA has impacted many of the surrounding towns, but fortunately, the city itself has remained largely unaffected. How would you say the DANA impacted your stay and experience here in Valencia?

Hi guys, it´s a pleasure to answer your questions! The truth is that it hasn’t affected me personally. But obviously, I am with people here at school who are worried about family members in Spain, especially in Valencia. The situation was a bit uncertain and tense at first, but everything has quickly returned to normal.

We’re really glad to hear that! It’s always a bit surreal, especially after an event like that. Did many people reach out to check if you were okay?

Yes, some family members and close friends called me to make sure I’m okay. I had to explain to them that I wasn’t directly affected since I was in the city and nothing happened here. The situation affected people who were outside the city, even though that hasn´t been very clear on new channels and other sources of information.

It´s nice to know that the city center was running as normal. Could you please explain a bit about your daily routine here in Valencia and if it has changed at all after the DANA?

My routine after the storm hasn’t affected my life at all. I’ve been able to do my usual tasks and maintain my normal day-to-day routine. I’ve been able to continue with my activities, going about my day, and attending Spanish classes as usual, since the Spanish classes were never canceled. The school has responded well to this unexpected situation, taking precautionary measures at all times.

Thank you for your kind words. We’ve tried to stay calm and cautious throughout the entire situation, and we feel very fortunate that we were able to continue with our work and classes without interruption. Do you think that it is difficult to find accurate information about the current situation in Valencia?

This question is a bit difficult for me to answer because I don’t have social media. But from what I’ve perceived, floods are a natural occurrence. At first, it can cause collective panic, but over time, the situation becomes more stable because there has been a very organized and efficient collective response. Everything that was shown in the news has been misinterpreted, as they weren’t able to explain the situation from an objective standpoint.

Thanks a lot Niklas, we appreicate you taking the time to talk to us!
