Transportation alternatives after the DANA in Valencia

Our blog today is a bit different than usual as we reflect on last week´s events after the DANA. The Valencian community saw heavy rains, flooding, and damage to multiple neighbourhoods, infrastructures, oublic buildings, schools and public transportation. Although the situation is starting to improve, many people in Valencia are still facing difficulties returning to their daily routines due to disruptions in train, bus, and metro services, as well as affected roadways.

It’s understandable that returning to normalcy is challenging, but fortunately, there are various alternatives to help us get around the city efficiently, sustainably, and most importantly, safely. Below, we will explore some transportation options that can help you navigate the challenges caused by the DANA and adapt to the new mobility landscape in Valencia.

Bicycles and Electric Scooters: The Eco-friendly and Agile Option

If the streets are clear and the weather permits, bicycles and electric scooters can be an excellent option for moving quickly around Valencia. The city boasts an extensive network of bike lanes and public bike rental systems like Valenbisi, which allows users to rent and return bikes at various points across the city. Electric scooters are also a popular alternative, and are available in most rental shops at affordable prices. Another great way to travel around is with the app YEGO, a popular motorcyle- sharing app that allows users to rent eco-friendly vehicles for short trips in urban areas. This form of transport is not only fast and affordable but also environmentally friendly.

Carsharing and Ridesharing: Convenient and Flexible Options

If you prefer something more comfortable or need to travel longer distances, carsharing and ridesharing services can be very useful. Platforms like Car2Go and Zity allow users to rent cars by the minute, without worrying about parking or maintenance. If you don’t want to drive yourself, ridesharing is a practical option. Services like Uber and Cabify are operational in Valencia, and while there may be reduced availability during times of high demand, they still represent a good alternative.

Alternative Public Transport: Buses and Microbuses

While metro and train services have faced major interruptions due to the rains and flooding, Valencia’s bus system has continued to operate normally, and in some cases, routes have been expanded to facilitate access to affected areas. The Generalitat has introduced 12 new bus lines, which will begin operating this Tuesday to improve connectivity between various neighborhoods and nearby towns around Valencia. These new routes aim to ensure mobility for citizens following the temporary suspension of metro services due to the recent DANA.

These lines will connect with Valencia or EMT bus stops, Cercanías stations, and the already established Metrobús lines, allowing users to continue their usual commutes. Be sure to check for updated routes on the Valencia City Hall website or through public transportation apps to see which lines are available and how they’ve adapted to the current conditions. Trains and Trams: Check Updated Schedules

While some sections of the train and tram network have been impacted, Renfe and FGV services have been working to restore operations on key routes. It’s important to check real-time updates, as schedules may vary depending on the weather and infrastructure restoration efforts. Mobile apps and the operators’ websites are reliable sources of information.

Walking

Although it may not be the fastest option, walking is an alternative that’s always available. If you live near your workplace or school, and the streets are passable, walking can be a healthy way to get around the city, while avoiding traffic congestion and public transportation. It’s also a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and  have some down time.
