Our blog this week talks about some of the best places to visit this summer in Valenica (all of which are actually outside of the city). When you think of Valencia city and its stunning architecture, vibrant cultural scene, and bustling lifestyle, it is easy to understand why it is undoubtedly a gem in Spain and a great holiday destination.

 

Having said this, the true essence of the Valencian Community extends far beyond its capital. The region is dotted with picturesque towns, each offering unique experiences and attractions that make them worthy of exploration. Below we talk about 3 towns outside of Valencia city and why you should consider visiting them instead of taking a city break this summer.

 

Javea

Javea (Xàbia in Valencian) is a beautiful coastal town located on the Costa Blanca in Spain. Not only does it boast some of the most beautiful beaches in Spain, but it is also known for its crisp, crystal-clear waters, which are great for snorkelling and diving. The warm temperatures and diverse landscapes make it a fantastic choice to visit in the summer.

 

Javea´s old town

Javea is rich in historical and cultural sites which are great for exploring. Visitors can explore its old town and walk through the narrow, winding streets lined with historic buildings, shops and cafes. The San Bartolome church, a stunning 14th-century Gothic-style church is also a great spot to get lost in. There are also a number of museums where you can learn about Javea´s cultural heritage and preserved traditions.

 

Natural beauty 

Many Valencian towns are steeped in history and Javea is not the exception, its natural beauty however is also quite impressive. The Montgo Natural park is a nature reserve which offers hiking trails with breathtaking views of the coastline and the Mediterranean Sea. There is no better way to relax and enjoy the day than getting lost in nature and its beauty and Javea lets you do all of this and more. The town is also home to numerous rocky coves, encouraging a more secluded and tranquil experience.

 

Morella

Nestled in the mountainous region of the Valencian Community, Morella is a historic gem offering a unique blend of cultural, architectural, and natural attractions. Here’s why Morella is an excellent destination for a summer visit:

 

Morella Castle

Some would call it an iconic landmark. The castle dominates the town, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Its strategic position has made it a crucial fortification throughout history. Visitors can wander through the ruins, imagining the historical events that took place there. The climb to the top rewards with stunning views of the medevil town.

Morella´s traditional dishes offer a taste of authentic Valencian cuisine, with unique dishes such as flaons (sweet pastries filled with cheese) and local lamb. This town is also big on artisian products so visitors have the chance to browse markets and shops for local crafts, cheeses, cured meats, and other regional specialties. If you´re big on souvenirs and local produce then Morella is the place to visit!

 

 

Peñíscola

Our last recommendation has to be Peñíscola, a stunning coastal town in the Valencian community which is filled with charm, rich history and vibrant culture. Not only is this town always busy with local events, but it its scenic beach and precious marine life make it a diver´s paradise like Javea.

 

Festivals & Cultural events

Local festivals like the Patron Saint Festivities of the Virgin of Ermitana are held in September and include traditional dances, music, processions, and fireworks. Not only does this offer a deep cultural experience to all visitors, but you are also able to experience or even participate in these vibrant, well preserved celebrations.

 

The international Comedy film festival is also a big hit in Peñíscola. Held annually, this festival attracts filmmakers and comedy enthusiasts, offering screenings, workshops, and events related to comedic films. Something a bit more unique and artistic to shake your vacations up a bit!

 

A family- friendly destination

The great thing about Peñíscola is that it has attractions for all ages and is certain to keep everyone entertained with it´s variety of events and celebrations.
