La Batalla de Flores: When is it and how to celebrate

One of the most eagerly awaited events in Valencia this July is just a few days away: the Battle of Flowers, an occasion recognized as a Fiesta of Regional Tourist Interest by the Generalitat Valenciana. As part of the Gran Feria de Valencia, an annual summer festival held throughout July, the Battle of Flowers transforms the Paseo de la Alameda on the last Sunday of the month into a breathtaking floral spectacle.

Impressive flower-adorned floats parade before the peaceful battle begins, during which more than a million carnations are thrown, covering the Paseo de la Alameda with a vibrant floral blanket. The celebration doesn’t end there; the festivities continue into the night with various entertainment options available throughout the city.

History of the event

Imported from Nice, France, by Pascual Frígola, Baron of Cortes, in 1891, the Battle of Flowers has always been one of the main attractions of the Gran Feria de Valencia. Captivated by the originality, color, and beauty of this festival during his summer stays in Nice, the Baron decided to incorporate it into Valencia’s July festival calendar. As a result, Valencia became the second city in the world and the first in Spain to host a Battle of Flowers.

Over its more than 100-year history, this traditional festival has seen some changes while retaining its core essence. Originally held on July 31, it was later moved to the last Sunday of the month. The carriages that once participated have evolved into the stunning floral floats that parade each year. However, one thing that has remained constant is its iconic location: the Paseo de la Alameda.

The festivities start with a celebration by the Municipal Police, followed by the Valencian parade with jewelry bearers and flower-decorated horse-drawn carriages featuring couples in traditional costumes. Next is the float parade, which each year amazes with its daring designs and colors. After the award ceremony, a signal marks the start of the grand flower battle. It’s an event that can only be fully appreciated in person.

Who can participate?

Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the beautiful display of colours and flowers but is important to note one thing. Only those who have secured a ticket for the stands set up by the Valencia City Council will be able to throw flowers. The rest of the attendees must enjoy the spectacle from the sidelines.

Historical Cancellations

Wars have been the primary reason for the cancellation of this grand event. The first cancellation occurred in 1898 due to the Cuban War, the second in 1909 due to the National Exposition, and finally, the Spanish Civil War halted the festivities from 1936 to 1938.

Despite these interruptions, the Battle of Flowers has always been the highlight of the Gran Feria’s programming—formerly known as the July Fair—and remains one of Valencia’s most important celebrations, deeply embedded in the city’s tradition.

Post-Parade Festivities

Time: 10PM and onwards

After the parade, the festivities continue with more music, dancing, and entertainment in various parts of the city. Many people head to local bars and restaurants to enjoy traditional Valencian food and drinks, continuing the celebrations late into the night.
