Exploring Requena: Valencia’s hidden gem

Surprisingly underappreciated and overlooked by tourists, Requena is a town filled with famous wineries, historic sites and beautiful streets. It’s natural beauty and gastronomic delights makes it easy to fall in love with and most would say its one of Spain’s hidden gems.

 

This blog will explore the history and culture of Requena and include all of the unique and fun experiences that you can indulge in! As well as this, Euroace is planning a trip to Requena very soon so you’ll even get the chance to experience this beautiful town and all of its characteristics!

 

Requena’s history

Sitting some 692m above sea level and dating all the way back to the Iron Age, Requena is a town filled with treasures that tell stories of the town. It’s impressive cobblestone streets and well-preserved medieval architecture really does succeed in transporting you back in time. A few examples of this magnificent architecture and definite places to visit include the San Nicolás Church and the historic Torres de Serranos. 

 

Declared an historic and artistic conservation area in 1966, Requena’s historic centre really preserves its culture and history. A visit around La Villa runs through narrow streets with houses bearing coats-of-arms, charming squares and typical houses decorated with tiles and elaborate ironwork. Another thing to look out for it Requena’s castle and keep, both built by the Moors and, at present, house the Wine Harvest Festival Museum.

 

Wine, and more wine!

Requena is definitely for all the wine lovers out there and its vineyards are proof of its deep – rooted viticultural traditions. The best way to soak up all of Requena’s wine culture is to take a stroll through the vineyards and then of course, indulge in a local wine-tasting experience. The region is renowned for its flavorful red wine and sparkling cavas, making it a haven for wine enthusiasts.

 

Our trip to Requena will include a visit to the Muestra Embutido y Vino de Requena, which is Requena’s food and wine festival.  A wide variety of typical dishes and local products of Requena will be displayed for attendees to enjoy so make sure you don’t miss it!

 

Festivals and celebrations

Requena is much more than just wine and food – it also comes alive during its festivals and events! The fiesta de la Vendimia, which celebrates the grape harvest, successfully transforms this town into a live display of music, dance and you guessed it, wine!

 

Requena’s kindspirited people

One of the most important things about visiting a new place is the reception from the locals and residents and lucky for you, Requena’s local’s exude both warmth and hospitality, making visitors feel like they’ve found a home away from home. It is easy to engage in conversations at local cafes and embrace the genuine friendliness of people in this lovely town.
