Thinking of a Gap Year in 2023?
There’s so much to explore and so much to learn from taking a gap year before university, during, or even if you’re contemplating your next career move. It’s a chance to travel, see the world and discover new horizons.
Here’s what you can expect if you decide to take a gap year in 2023 and what you’ll need to do to prepare for it ahead of time!
Opportunities
Firstly it has to be said that since covid-19 halted travel and mobility, gap year programs and international travel are back to an all time high!
This is good in the sense that more and more opportunities and study abroad programs are available, as well as many locations to choose from, yet it’s true that your gap year may require more planning in advance as flights and accommodation will fill up fast.
In terms of taking a gap year in Spain, the earlier you plan your program the more you’ll get from it. Whether that’s finding cheaper flights, more centrally located living, more affordable gap year services, or even finding the right experience for you.
We advise getting your travel dates sorted as far in advance as possible, then looking for study abroad opportunities that fit your requirements. Once you’ve found the right program for you, check locations and pin down flights and accommodation to get your gap year underway.
Regulations
While many countries have taken away restrictions related to covid-19, some still have them in effect. It’s important that you know what these are before you travel so you’re aware of what you need to abide by. For example, here in Valencia face masks are still required on public transport and health travel forms are still necessary too.
Regarding travel documents, make sure you go to the website of the Spanish Embassy in your country to check the exact travel documents you’ll need. Maybe you need a visa or maybe you need to apply for a residency card or health insurance in your destination country, so check this out in advance. Some Spanish Embassies are experiencing big delays on visa processing and so once again, it’s important to organize your dates ahead of time and book your visa appointment / organize your travel documents as early as you can.
One final thing, make sure your passport is in date! Many European countries require more than 6 months left on your passport in order to travel.
Growth
It sounds cliché but a gap year guarantees growth! You’ll be required to get out of your comfort zone while you explore a new culture and get to grips with another language. If you take an internship or volunteer opportunity, you’ll expand your horizons in terms of business, community, and social differences on an international level.
Meeting people from new cultures and learning about customs and traditions in your destination country are bound to enhance your perspective and open your mind to new ideas and lifestyles. This may be the inspiration you’re looking for and help you to make some decisions on your next steps.
